Water Chestnut Harvesting and Paddle

Where: Chicopee River’s Oxford Marsh, Chicopee (a beautiful little-known spot with good wildlife viewing potential)

When:

  • Saturday, July 10th, 2021.
  • Saturday, July 31st, 2021

Meet at 9:00 AM, with sign in and orientation to the project. Off the water for lunch about 12:30 pm.

What to Wear/Bring: Wear something you don’t mind getting muddy (potentially stained) and wet. Sturdy water shoes, sneakers or rubber boots recommended (no flip flops or open sandals). Eat before you come and bring a hearty snack and plenty of water. Make sure it’s in a waterproof container to keep it mud-free. Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses recommended.

Where to meet/park: 377 Fuller Rd. See the attached site map with more detailed instructions. We’ll be there early to flag in attendees.

(possible second access site may be used, Taylor St-TBA)

Driving Tips: The meeting site is a little more than a mile east of Rt 33. Fuller Rd is just south of the Chicopee Mass Turnpike exit interchange with Rt 33. Or west of the Fuller Rd Chicopee exit off 291, south of Mass Pike exit.

Bring your Own Canoe or Kayak. Canoes hold more plants so are ideal, but kayaks work fine too! (If you have a bucket handy, please bring it).

Other Gear Provided: Long waterproof gloves, buckets, garbage bags, etc. will be provided.

RSVP: Please confirm your interest in helping, email: chicopeewatershed@gmail.com and don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions. Also confirm that you will be bringing a canoe or kayak and, if a canoe, indicate if you need a partner.

Pre-sign: /waiver/ (Note: Water Chestnut program) Be prepared to sign a CRC service waiver form.

In case of bad weather: In case of likely bad weather, the event will be postponed. I’ll send an email by 7pm on Friday.

Looking forward to paddling and pulling with you!
