Fish migratory season is coming to an end. The sea lamprey, an anadromous migratory fish species native to our watershed, live out their lives in salted water, such as oceans and seas, and travel up freshwater rivers and streams to spawn. In the process, they build identifiable rock formations where they lay their eggs. We’re trying to learn more about sea lamprey population in the tributaries of the Connecticut River and which streams they prefer to spawn in. Thanks to these rock nests they leave behind after laying their eggs in them, we’re able to estimate spawner populations.

Volunteers can help us by walking rivers and streams and document sea lamprey nests.  The data collected from these surveys help fishery biologists identify suitable habitat, find impassable barriers such as dams and natural blockades.
