LiveStream S2, Ep5: River Connections for Healthy Communities and Healthy Rivers

Rivers interact with our lives in lots of ways – floods, recreation, wildlife and more. The health of rivers is also connected to our own wellbeing in many ways. Christine Hatch, from UMass Amherst, shares how communities can connect with and nurture rivers while keeping our critical infrastructure out of harm’s way. Brian Yellen, founding member of Fort River Watershed Association and UMass professor, shares a model for how local residents are working together to connect with and protect the Fort River, the longest free-flowing un-dammed tributary of the Connecticut River in MA, when it was threatened by development.

Presenters:

Christine Hatch is research-extension liaison for the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment, and extension associate professor of water resources and climate change in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is a leader of the RiverSmart Communities project, supporting ecologically restorative flood prevention and remediation in New England.

Brian Yellen is a research professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, specializing in water resources and coastal processes. He helped to start Fort River Watershed Association with support of community members in 2019.
