Paddle to Peskeompskut with the Nolumbeka Project
August 5, 2022 @ 9:30 am - 2:00 pm EDT
Celebrating Indigenous communities with a round-trip mishoon, canoe, and kayak paddle on the Connecticut River!
Join the Nolumbeka Project and the Connecticut River Conservancy for a paddle in observance of the 9th Annual Pocumtuck Homelands Festival: A Celebration of Native American Art, Music, and Cultures.
Jonathan Perry and members of the Wampanaug Aquinnah will paddle the traditional dug-out mishoon crafted as part of the 2019 festival and first launched in 2020. A mishoon constructed in 2021 by a crew of Nipmuc artisans, including Nipmuc Cultural Steward Andre Strongbearheart Gaines, Jr. will also be taking part. The mishoon was built in Ashfield on the land of the Ohketeau Cultural Center and Double Edge Theater.
This paddle requires approximately 3 hours of paddling on the Connecticut River.
Conditions might include waves from boats, reversing currents due to hydro storage pumping, strong headwinds and unmarked debris.
Prior paddling experience is encouraged.
