Position Description:
The Connecticut River Conservancy (CRC) seeks a seasonal fisheries technician to monitor migratory fish climbing the fish ladders during the spring 2023 season. This program includes reviewing video footage taken at the facilities to enumerate the passage of diadromous species in the Connecticut River. There will be some flexibility to work remotely if the candidate is not local. Hours are flexible within the 40 hours a week requirement, but there may be some required availability during the standard 9-5 Monday thru Friday schedule. Fish passage facilities included in this work are the Bellows Falls and Vernon Hydroelectric Dams, both located in Southeastern Vermont, and as such, VT Fish and Wildlife Department will also be involved in supervising this position. A computer will be provided. There will also be a need for this position to participate in field work during the migration season. This will involve wading in rivers with staff and volunteers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Study and reference Salmonsoft FishTick 4.0 user manual.
- Fish identification guides and training provided.
- Monitor hours of fish ladders activity
- Complete, organize, and submit data and reports to supervisors in a timely manner.
- Provide weekly updates on progress and communicate any issues in a timely manner.
- Assist in other field-based migratory fish surveys, including some volunteer coordination.
Required Skills:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Field-based or classroom experience conducting migratory fish
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to participate in strenuous physical activity
- Ability to work both in the office as well as on the river
- Comfortable being around fish and fishing equipment
- Competency using excel spreadsheets and mapping tools
