Essex Harbor is near the southern end of the Connecticut River, where boats can easily navigate into Long Island Sound or up river to Hartford. In the War of 1812, Essex was a major American port suffered great loss of shipping vessels when attacked by the British Navy. Today the harbor shelters many small sail boats and hosts the Connecticut River Museum. Photographer Al Braden captured this classic view with the late afternoon sun lighting the scene perfectly.
